Job Description
Daily Express is seeking dedicated and experienced Oversize Load Pilot Drivers for a critical remote escort vehicle role. This independent contractor position is 100% remote, allowing you to manage your assignments and routes from your home base while providing essential support to our heavy haul operations across the nation. As a Pilot Driver, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient transport of oversize and overweight loads, requiring exceptional situational awareness, communication skills, and strict adherence to all state and federal regulations. This role demands a high level of responsibility and independence, as you will be the eyes and ears on the road, safeguarding both our valuable cargo and public safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections of escort vehicles and equipment to ensure readiness.
- Perform comprehensive route surveys and risk assessments prior to and during transport, identifying potential hazards and clearance issues.
- Maintain constant and clear communication with the truck driver, dispatch, and other escort personnel via two-way radio and phone.
- Implement effective traffic control and safety measures around oversize loads, including flagger operations when required.
- Adhere strictly to all state and federal permitting, escort, and safety regulations for oversize and overweight loads.
- Provide clear and timely warnings to the public and other drivers regarding the presence and movements of oversize loads.
- Document and report any incidents, hazards, or deviations encountered during transport promptly.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping of mileage, hours of service, expenses, and load-specific documentation.
- Assist in the safe maneuvering of the oversize load through challenging areas, including turns, intersections, and construction zones.
Required Skills
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Minimum of 2 years of proven experience as an escort vehicle driver for oversize loads.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong navigational abilities and proficiency with GPS systems and mapping software.
- In-depth knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and state-specific oversize load laws.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and make critical decisions under pressure.
- Physical ability to perform vehicle inspections and duties in varying weather conditions and environments.
- Reliable personal vehicle suitable for pilot/escort duties, equipped with necessary safety lighting and signage.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator (P/EVO) credentials from multiple states.
- Experience with specific types of heavy haul equipment (e.g., multi-axle trailers, specialized dollies, wind energy components).
- Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and dispatch software platforms.
- Advanced first aid and safety certifications.
- Previous experience as an independent contractor in a transportation-related field.
