Job Description

Join the Imperial Calcasieu Museum as an Exhibit Installation Assistant! This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with a keen eye for detail and a dedication to careful handling of delicate artifacts and artworks. While prior experience is not required – we will provide comprehensive training – a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and physical capability are essential. You will be an integral part of our team, supporting the preparation, installation, and de-installation of museum exhibits, ensuring their safety and aesthetic presentation. This role offers hands-on experience in a dynamic museum environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the safe and careful handling, movement, and placement of museum artifacts, artworks, and exhibit components.
  • Learn and apply best practices for art handling, rigging, and installation techniques under supervision.
  • Support the preparation of exhibit spaces, including minor patching, painting, and cleaning.
  • Fabricate and assemble exhibit furniture, pedestals, and display cases as needed.
  • Aid in the installation and de-installation of lighting, audio-visual equipment, and interpretive graphics.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in exhibition spaces and preparation areas.
  • Perform general maintenance and upkeep on existing exhibits.
  • Document exhibit installations, condition reports, and inventory as required.
  • Collaborate effectively with curatorial, registration, and facilities teams.

Required Skills

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions carefully and precisely.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to meticulous work.
  • Physical ability to lift and move objects up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform tasks requiring dexterity.
  • Basic knowledge of hand and power tools (or willingness to learn rapidly).
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • A proactive and positive attitude with a strong desire to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in a museum, gallery, theater, or related environment (volunteer experience welcome).
  • Basic carpentry or construction skills.
  • Knowledge of art handling and conservation principles.
