Job Description
Are you seeking a challenging and rewarding career path that serves the community? The Irving Fire Department is actively recruiting highly motivated individuals for a Fire Truck Driver (Trainee) position. This entry-level role is perfect for those with a strong desire to learn, grow, and contribute to public safety, even without prior experience. As a Trainee, you will undergo comprehensive training in fire suppression techniques, emergency medical response, and the specialized operation of fire apparatus. This includes classroom instruction, hands-on drills, and mentorship from experienced firefighters. Your journey will begin with foundational skills, leading to certification and the critical responsibility of safely operating and maintaining fire vehicles during emergency and non-emergency situations. This is an on-site position requiring full dedication to training and service.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate fully in all required training programs, including classroom learning and practical exercises related to fire suppression and emergency medical services.
- Learn to safely operate and maintain various fire department vehicles, including fire engines and ladder trucks, under supervision.
- Assist in the inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment.
- Respond to emergency calls, including fires, medical emergencies, and other public safety incidents, as part of a team.
- Perform firefighting duties as directed, including hose line deployment, ventilation, search and rescue, and overhaul operations.
- Administer basic life support and first aid to victims as trained and authorized.
- Maintain physical fitness and mental readiness required for emergency response.
- Adhere to all department policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Engage in community outreach and public education initiatives.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver's License.
- Ability to obtain a Texas Class B Exempt or Commercial Driver's License within a specified timeframe after hire.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background check, physical examination, and drug screening.
- Strong moral character and a commitment to public service.
- Excellent physical stamina and agility.
- Ability to work effectively in high-stress and unpredictable environments.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a Firefighter I certification program.
- EMT-Basic or Paramedic certification.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field.
- Prior experience in a volunteer fire department or similar public safety role.
- Residency within the City of Irving or surrounding areas.
