Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and resilient Correctional Facility Nurse to join our healthcare team within a secure environment in Portland, ME. This role offers a unique opportunity to provide comprehensive nursing care to an incarcerated patient population, focusing on primary care, emergency response, and chronic disease management. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to ensure patient safety and well-being, adhering to all security protocols and professional nursing standards. This position demands strong clinical judgment, adaptability, and a commitment to providing equitable healthcare in a unique setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care, including health assessments, medication administration, and wound care, to incarcerated individuals.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to medical emergencies, including trauma, cardiac events, and other acute conditions, within the facility.
  • Implement and monitor care plans for patients with chronic diseases, ensuring continuity of care and appropriate interventions.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, documenting all patient interactions, treatments, and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with physicians, psychiatrists, security staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.
  • Educate patients on health conditions, preventive measures, and medication adherence.
  • Adhere strictly to all correctional facility policies, procedures, and security protocols.
  • Conduct health screenings and provide immunizations as required.
  • Assist with intake physicals and health evaluations for new inmates.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff training programs.

Required Skills

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Maine.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical nursing experience.
  • Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a secure and fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interacting respectfully with diverse patient populations and staff.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and adhere to ethical nursing practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and decisive during emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Experience in a correctional, emergency, psychiatric, or urgent care setting.
  • Knowledge of correctional healthcare standards (e.g., NCCHC, ACA).
  • Experience with de-escalation techniques and conflict resolution.
  • Bilingual proficiency is a plus.
