Job Description

The Town of Digby Public Works Department is seeking a diligent and reliable City Street Sweeper Operator. This full-time position involves operating street sweeping equipment to ensure the cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of our town’s roads, parking lots, and public areas. Early morning starts are a key component of this role, allowing for efficient work with minimal traffic disruption. Key Responsibilities

  • Operate street sweeping vehicles and associated equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment and complete daily logs.
  • Identify and report any mechanical issues or maintenance needs of the sweeper.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and departmental procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and report any damage.
  • Collect and dispose of debris, leaves, and other waste from streets and public areas.
  • Monitor and adjust sweeping patterns and brush settings to optimize cleaning performance.
  • Work effectively during early morning hours, often independently.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding work progress and any issues encountered.

Required Skills

  • Valid Class 3 or D driver's license (or equivalent) with air brake endorsement (or willingness to obtain).
  • Proven ability to safely operate heavy vehicles/equipment.
  • Strong understanding of traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Good physical condition, capable of bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
  • Punctual and reliable, especially for early morning shifts.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for minor equipment checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating street sweepers or similar heavy-duty cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of municipal public works operations.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Clean driving record.
