Job Description
AECOM is seeking dedicated and experienced Desert Paleontology Monitors for high-priority projects across Utah (UT) and Nevada (NV). This critical role involves monitoring ground-disturbing activities on construction, energy, and resource development sites to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations regarding paleontological resources. The successful candidate will identify, document, and recover fossil resources in challenging desert environments. This position offers a high hourly rate, reflecting the specialized expertise required and the demanding nature of field work in remote desert locations. You will be an an integral part of our environmental team, protecting valuable scientific and cultural heritage.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily paleontological monitoring of ground-disturbing activities (e.g., trenching, grading, excavation) on project sites in Utah and Nevada.
- Identify and evaluate potential fossiliferous deposits and paleontological resources.
- Implement field mitigation measures, including fossil recovery, stabilization, and collection, following established protocols.
- Document all findings meticulously, including detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS coordinates.
- Prepare daily monitoring reports and contribute to comprehensive technical reports.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, construction crews, and regulatory agency representatives regarding paleontological concerns.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations in all field activities.
- Train and mentor junior field staff or interns as needed.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in paleontological monitoring or field paleontology.
- Demonstrated ability to identify fossils in various geological contexts, particularly in desert environments.
- Proficiency with GPS devices, digital mapping software, and standard field equipment.
- Excellent observational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate field records.
- Strong understanding of federal and state paleontological resource management regulations (e.g., BLM, NEPA).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in remote, challenging desert conditions for extended periods.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, Archaeology, or a related field.
- Previous experience working on projects within Utah and/or Nevada.
- OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour construction safety certification.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
