Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Digital Archivist with a strong focus on historical data to join our remote team. This role is crucial for preserving and making accessible Google’s vast collection of historical digital assets. You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of digital archiving, from acquisition and appraisal to preservation, access, and long-term storage strategies. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of archival principles, digital preservation techniques, and experience working with diverse historical datasets and media formats. This is a 100% remote position, allowing you to work from anywhere within the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies for the appraisal, acquisition, processing, and preservation of born-digital and digitized historical records.
  • Manage and maintain digital archives, ensuring data integrity, security, and accessibility.
  • Perform metadata creation and enhancement according to established archival standards (e.g., DACS, EAD, PREMIS).
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement appropriate digital preservation tools and technologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers, and legal experts, to integrate archival best practices into new systems and workflows.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on digital preservation policies and procedures.
  • Conduct research and stay current with emerging trends and technologies in digital archiving and historical data management.
  • Develop and deliver training sessions on digital archiving best practices to internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legal and ethical standards for data privacy and access.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in digital archiving, records management, or library science, specifically with historical data.
  • Strong understanding of digital preservation principles, standards, and practices.
  • Proficiency with metadata standards (e.g., DACS, EAD, MARC, Dublin Core) and content management systems.
  • Experience with various digital file formats and their long-term preservation challenges.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team environment.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property rights, copyright, and privacy laws related to digital content.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Archival Studies, Library Science, Information Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with large-scale digital repositories and cloud storage solutions.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automated processing and data management.
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform services relevant to data storage and management.
  • Experience in developing and implementing digital preservation policies and workflows.
  • Published research or presentations on digital archiving topics.
