Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled High School Jazz Band Instructor to lead our evening rehearsals. This part-time position offers top rates for an individual passionate about jazz music and youth education. The instructor will be responsible for teaching, directing, and inspiring high school students in the art of jazz ensemble performance. This role involves developing musical proficiency, fostering improvisation skills, and preparing students for various performances and competitions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct engaging and effective evening rehearsals for the high school jazz band.
  • Teach jazz theory, harmony, improvisation techniques, and ensemble performance practices.
  • Select and arrange appropriate repertoire that challenges and inspires students.
  • Prepare the jazz band for school concerts, community events, and potential competitions.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and disciplined learning environment.
  • Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback.
  • Collaborate with other music department staff and school administration as needed.
  • Oversee the care and maintenance of school instruments and equipment used by the jazz band.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated proficiency in multiple jazz instruments (e.g., saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums).
  • Strong conducting and rehearsal leadership skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of jazz history, theory, and various jazz styles.
  • Proven experience teaching or directing high school-level instrumental ensembles, specifically jazz bands.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to motivate and connect with students.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and arrange complex musical scores.
  • Organizational skills for planning rehearsals and managing performances.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Jazz Studies, or a related field.
  • Valid California Teaching Credential, especially in Music.
  • Experience with music technology and recording software.
  • A track record of directing successful or award-winning jazz ensembles.
  • Ability to compose or arrange music for varying skill levels.
