Job Description

We are seeking a proactive and dedicated Marine Patrol Assistant to join our Public Safety team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for patrolling our local waterways, ensuring compliance with marine regulations, and providing assistance to the public. Equipped with a council-provided watercraft, you will play a key part in maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all water users. This position offers a unique opportunity to work outdoors, protect our local environment, and serve the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular patrols of designated waterways using provided watercraft to monitor activities and ensure public safety.
  • Enforce local bylaws, marine regulations, and safety standards.
  • Provide assistance to boaters and other water users, offering information and support as needed.
  • Respond to incidents, accidents, and emergencies on the water, coordinating with emergency services when necessary.
  • Conduct safety inspections of vessels and equipment to ensure compliance.
  • Educate the public on safe boating practices, environmental protection, and waterway regulations.
  • Document incidents, observations, and patrol activities accurately.
  • Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of watercraft and associated equipment.
  • Participate in public outreach events and community engagement activities related to water safety.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in operating small watercraft (e.g., rigid inflatable boats, motorboats).
  • Strong understanding of marine safety protocols and navigational rules.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for public interaction.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making abilities in dynamic environments.
  • Basic first aid and CPR certification.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties including boarding vessels, lifting equipment, and prolonged periods on the water.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant maritime qualifications (e.g., RYA Powerboat Level 2, Inland Waterways Helmsman's Certificate).
  • Experience in a public safety, law enforcement, or maritime enforcement role.
  • Knowledge of local Chelmsford waterways and environmental regulations.
  • Lifeguard or water rescue certification.
  • Full UK driving license.
