Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mastering Engineer to elevate the sonic quality of Minnesota Public Radio’s diverse audio content. This critical role will be instrumental in ensuring our music programming, podcasts, and digital productions meet uncompromising standards of clarity, dynamics, and fidelity across all distribution channels. The ideal candidate will possess a profound understanding of audio mastering principles, an exceptional ear, and meticulous attention to detail, working to enhance the listening experience for our extensive audience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform high-quality audio mastering for MPR's diverse content, including music broadcasts, digital streams, podcasts, and special productions.
  • Collaborate with producers, sound designers, and content creators to achieve their sonic vision and ensure final masters meet MPR's quality benchmarks.
  • Ensure optimal loudness, dynamics, spectral balance, and overall sonic consistency across various audio projects and platforms.
  • Prepare and deliver master audio files in specified formats for broadcast, streaming, podcast platforms, and archival purposes.
  • Maintain and calibrate mastering equipment and software, ensuring accuracy and peak performance.
  • Stay current with industry trends, audio technologies, and best practices in mastering for broadcast and digital media.
  • Accurately archive project assets and session files.
  • Provide expert technical advice on audio production, mixing, and delivery standards.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Mastering Engineer in a professional audio environment.
  • Expert proficiency with mastering software (e.g., SADiE, Sequoia, WaveLab, Pro Tools, Ozone, FabFilter).
  • In-depth knowledge of audio signal processing, acoustics, and psychoacoustics.
  • Exceptional critical listening skills and a refined ear for sonic detail.
  • Strong understanding of various audio formats, codecs, and delivery specifications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot audio issues effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to quality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Audio Engineering, Music Production, or a related field.
  • Experience with broadcast audio standards and loudness specifications (e.g., EBU R 128, ATSC A/85).
  • Knowledge of advanced spectral editing and restoration techniques.
  • Familiarity with various analog and digital mastering hardware.
  • Portfolio of successfully mastered projects, demonstrating high-fidelity audio production.
