Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Metallurgical Chemist with a strong focus on mining and metal processes to join our advanced research and development team in Tulsa, OK. This role is crucial for ensuring the quality, integrity, and performance of our metal products from raw materials through finished goods. The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge in analytical chemistry, material science, and metallurgical principles, with a proven ability to apply these in an industrial setting. You will contribute to process optimization, failure analysis, and new material development, playing a key part in maintaining Nucor’s reputation for excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform chemical analysis of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished metal products using various analytical techniques (e.g., XRF, ICP-OES, combustion analysis).
  • Conduct metallographic examinations, including sample preparation, microscopy, and image analysis, to assess microstructure and material properties.
  • Investigate and diagnose material failures, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
  • Develop and optimize analytical methods and laboratory procedures to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, and quality control teams to support process improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with quality standards (e.g., ISO 17025).
  • Prepare detailed reports, document findings, and present technical information to internal stakeholders.
  • Adhere to strict safety protocols and environmental regulations in all laboratory and field activities.
  • Contribute to research and development projects aimed at new alloy development or process innovation.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related engineering field.
  • 3+ years of experience in a metallurgical laboratory or industrial setting, specifically with a focus on mining or metal processing.
  • Proficiency with analytical techniques such as XRF, ICP-OES, SEM/EDS, and optical microscopy.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgical principles, including phase transformations, heat treatment, and mechanical properties of metals.
  • Experience with root cause analysis and failure investigation.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software and Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or Materials Science.
  • Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Knowledge of steelmaking processes and specific alloy systems.
  • Familiarity with ASTM, ISO, and other relevant industry standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead small projects or initiatives.
