Job Description
Join Providence Health & Services as a Senior Music Companion and become a vital part of our patient care team. This deeply rewarding role focuses on enhancing the well-being and quality of life for our patients through the power of music. You will work directly with individuals, primarily in senior care or long-term care settings, providing personalized musical engagement, comfort, and companionship. This role requires a blend of musical aptitude, empathy, and an understanding of the therapeutic benefits of music in a healthcare context. You will be instrumental in creating joyful moments, fostering emotional expression, and providing a calming presence for those under our care.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement personalized music engagement plans for patients, considering their preferences, cognitive abilities, and healthcare goals.
- Lead individual and small group music sessions, utilizing various instruments, singing, and active listening techniques.
- Observe and document patient responses to music interventions, communicating observations to the care team.
- Provide compassionate companionship, building rapport and trust with patients and their families.
- Collaborate with nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to integrate music companion services into comprehensive care plans.
- Maintain a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for all music activities.
- Stay updated on best practices in music and health, particularly for geriatric and palliative care.
- Assist with other patient support activities as needed, within the scope of the companion role.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 4 years) in a music companion, music therapy assistant, or similar role, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- Proficiency in at least one musical instrument (e.g., guitar, piano, ukulele) and strong vocal abilities.
- Demonstrated understanding of the therapeutic benefits of music for diverse populations, including seniors and those with cognitive impairments.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a compassionate and patient demeanor.
- Ability to adapt music selections and engagement strategies to individual patient needs and preferences.
- Strong observational and documentation skills.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Therapy, Recreational Therapy, or a related field.
- Experience working with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Knowledge of various music genres and cultural musical traditions.
- Certification as a Music Practitioner or similar credential.
- Experience in hospice or palliative care settings.
