Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Livestock Hauler for specialized long-haul routes. This role involves the safe and humane transportation of livestock across state lines, ensuring their welfare from origin to destination. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of animal husbandry, excellent driving skills, and a commitment to adhering to all DOT regulations and company safety standards. This is a critical role in our supply chain, requiring reliability, attention to detail, and a passion for animal care.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate commercial motor vehicles (CMV) to transport various types of livestock over long distances.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and trailers, including specialized livestock trailers.
- Ensure the humane treatment and welfare of all animals during loading, transit, and unloading.
- Monitor animal health and well-being throughout the journey, providing necessary care as required.
- Adhere strictly to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Hours of Service (HOS) rules, and company safety policies.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, delivery receipts, and other required paperwork.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, farm personnel, and receiving facilities.
- Perform minor roadside repairs as needed and report all maintenance issues promptly.
- Manage load securement and proper ventilation for livestock during transport.
- Maintain a clean driving record and comply with all traffic laws.
Required Skills
- Valid Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements.
- Minimum of 2 years of verifiable commercial driving experience, preferably with livestock.
- Proven experience with long-haul trucking operations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of animal husbandry and welfare practices relevant to transportation.
- Clean driving record and ability to pass drug and alcohol screenings.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively on the road.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Physical ability to perform demanding tasks associated with loading/unloading and animal care.
- Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and DOT regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience transporting specific types of livestock (e.g., cattle, hogs, poultry).
- Advanced training in animal welfare and handling techniques.
- Geographic knowledge of common livestock routes in the US.
- Defensive driving certification.
