Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Archaeologist / Heritage Manager to join our dynamic team in Gatineau, Quebec. This is a unique opportunity for an international professional looking to relocate to Canada, as visa sponsorship will be provided. The successful candidate will play a critical role in managing archaeological impact assessments, heritage studies, and regulatory compliance for a diverse portfolio of projects across Quebec and potentially other Canadian provinces. You will lead fieldwork, conduct research, prepare comprehensive reports, and engage with clients, Indigenous communities, and government agencies. This role demands a strong understanding of Canadian heritage legislation, excellent project management skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, ethical heritage solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage archaeological impact assessments, heritage resource impact assessments, and cultural heritage studies for various development projects.
- Conduct archaeological fieldwork, including surveys, testing, and excavations, adhering to provincial and federal standards.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, cultural heritage management plans, and archaeological permit applications.
- Ensure projects comply with relevant federal (e.g., Impact Assessment Act) and provincial (e.g., Cultural Heritage Act of Quebec) legislation and policies.
- Engage and consult with Indigenous communities, stakeholders, and government agencies regarding heritage matters.
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources effectively.
- Provide expert advice and recommendations to clients on cultural heritage issues and risk mitigation strategies.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to the professional development of the team.
- Participate in business development activities, including proposal writing and client relationship management.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Heritage Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in archaeology or cultural heritage management, preferably within a consulting environment.
- Demonstrated experience with Canadian federal and/or provincial (Quebec preferred) heritage legislation and regulatory frameworks.
- Proven experience leading archaeological fieldwork (surveys, testing, excavation) and producing technical reports.
- Strong project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; French language proficiency is a significant asset.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in a relevant field.
- Professional designation or eligibility for professional registration in Archaeology or Heritage Planning in Quebec or another Canadian province.
- Experience with GIS software and data management.
- Familiarity with Indigenous archaeology and traditional land use studies.
- Published research or presentations in the field of archaeology or heritage management.
- Experience working with remote sensing technologies in archaeology.
