Job Description

Are you an animal lover with a kind heart and a desire to make a difference in the lives of cats? The RSPCA Leicester Animal Centre is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Cattery Assistant to join our team for part-time evening shifts. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals looking to gain experience in animal care, providing essential support in maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for our feline residents. You will play a crucial role in the daily operations of our cattery, ensuring the well-being and happiness of the cats under our care during the vital evening hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performing routine cleaning and sanitization of cat pens, litter trays, and cattery areas to maintain high hygiene standards.
  • Feeding cats according to their individual dietary requirements and monitoring their food and water intake.
  • Administering basic medication as directed by veterinary staff, ensuring accurate dosages and timings.
  • Observing cats for any signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes and reporting concerns to senior staff.
  • Providing enrichment and socialization through gentle interaction, play, and comforting our feline residents.
  • Restocking supplies and ensuring all equipment is clean and in good working order.
  • Assisting with laundry and general upkeep of the cattery facility during evening hours.
  • Adhering to all health and safety protocols and animal welfare guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Genuine passion for animal welfare and a deep understanding of cat behaviour.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently during evening shifts.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to a part-time evening schedule.
  • Physical ability to perform duties including bending, lifting, and prolonged standing.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills to report observations effectively.
  • A compassionate and patient approach to handling animals, especially those who may be shy or stressed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (paid or volunteer) working with cats or other animals in a care setting.
  • Knowledge of basic animal first aid.
  • Understanding of disease prevention and control in an animal care environment.
