Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Digital Archivist with a strong focus on historical data to join our remote team. In this role, you will be instrumental in preserving, organizing, and making accessible Google’s vast and critical historical digital assets. This is a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge archival technologies and contribute to the legacy of one of the world’s most influential companies, all from a fully remote setup. You will manage complex digital collections, ensure their long-term integrity, and develop strategies for future accessibility and usability, supporting various internal teams in research and development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies for the long-term preservation and access of Google's historical digital assets.
  • Process, organize, and describe complex digital collections, applying appropriate metadata standards and archival principles.
  • Conduct forensic analysis and recovery of historical data from various digital formats and storage media.
  • Collaborate with engineering, legal, and research teams to identify, ingest, and manage digital records.
  • Ensure compliance with data governance policies, privacy regulations, and intellectual property rights.
  • Design and maintain digital repository systems and tools for efficient archival management.
  • Provide expertise and training on digital preservation best practices to internal stakeholders.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in digital archiving, records management, or library science, with a focus on historical or complex digital data.
  • Proficiency with digital preservation tools and technologies (e.g., Archivematica, Preservica, open-source solutions).
  • Strong understanding of metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, PREMIS, EAD) and data modeling.
  • Experience with various operating systems (Linux, Windows, macOS) and command-line interfaces.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Archival Studies, Library and Information Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automating archival tasks.
  • Familiarity with cloud storage platforms (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure).
  • Knowledge of forensic data acquisition and analysis techniques.
  • Understanding of copyright law, privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR), and ethical considerations in digital archiving.
