Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and physically capable Maritime Dock Worker with a focus on port logistics to join our team at the Port of Indiana – Burns Harbor terminal. In this vital role, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient handling of cargo, supporting all aspects of vessel loading and unloading operations, and ensuring adherence to all safety protocols and regulatory requirements. This position requires strong attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to operate various types of equipment in a dynamic port environment. You will be instrumental in maintaining the smooth flow of goods, contributing directly to our operational excellence and client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently load and unload vessels, barges, and trucks using appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Operate heavy machinery such as forklifts, cranes (with proper certification/training), and other port equipment.
  • Secure cargo for transport, including proper lashing and dunnage application.
  • Inspect cargo for damage and accurately record discrepancies.
  • Assist with general yard and warehouse duties, including cleaning and maintenance.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, maritime regulations, and environmental guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and vessel crew to ensure coordinated operations.
  • Participate in safety briefings and training sessions as required.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and report any malfunctions or maintenance needs.

Required Skills

  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) and perform strenuous physical tasks for extended periods.
  • Basic understanding of maritime safety procedures and port operations.
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to all operational guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as port operations demand.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a maritime, warehousing, or industrial setting.
  • Familiarity with various cargo types, including steel, project cargo, and dry bulk.
  • Certification or experience operating heavy equipment (e.g., forklifts, reach stackers, cranes).
  • Knowledge of basic rigging and signaling techniques.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
