Job Description

We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Medical Center Porters to join our essential services team at Royal Sussex County Hospital. In this vital role, you will be responsible for the safe and timely transport of patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies throughout the hospital, ensuring a smooth and efficient operation that directly impacts patient care. Adherence to NHS standards, excellent communication, and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment are paramount. Key Responsibilities

  • Transport patients safely and courteously between wards, departments, and other areas using appropriate mobility aids.
  • Relocate medical equipment, furniture, and supplies as required, ensuring proper handling and care.
  • Deliver and collect laboratory specimens, blood products, medical notes, and pharmaceutical items promptly.
  • Assist with the movement of deceased patients to the mortuary, demonstrating dignity and respect.
  • Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of all portering equipment, including trolleys and wheelchairs.
  • Communicate effectively with medical staff, patients, and visitors, providing reassurance and assistance as needed.
  • Adhere strictly to all hospital policies and procedures, including infection control and health and safety guidelines.
  • Respond to emergency calls and rapid response situations with efficiency and composure.
  • Undertake minor maintenance tasks and report any equipment faults promptly.

Required Skills

  • Excellent physical fitness and stamina for prolonged periods of walking, standing, and lifting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and patient-focused approach.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively within a team environment.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for understanding instructions and completing simple forms.
  • Understanding and commitment to patient confidentiality and data protection.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging or emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a portering role, preferably within a healthcare setting.
  • Basic First Aid certification.
  • Knowledge of hospital layout and procedures.
  • Proficiency in using two-way radio communication devices.
