Job Description

San Diego State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the School of Music and Dance. This is a significant leadership opportunity for a distinguished scholar, artist, or educator to guide a dynamic department committed to fostering excellence in performance, composition, music education, and scholarship. The successful candidate will provide strategic vision, administrative leadership, and advocate for the continued growth and innovation of our comprehensive music and dance programs. We seek a visionary leader who will inspire faculty, mentor students, and enhance the school’s reputation locally, nationally, and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary and strategic leadership for the School of Music and Dance, overseeing all academic programs, curricula, and departmental operations.
  • Manage departmental budget, resources, and facilities effectively.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty, fostering a collegial and productive environment.
  • Lead efforts in faculty hiring, development, and promotion/tenure processes.
  • Advocate for the school within the university and to external stakeholders, including donors and community partners.
  • Oversee student recruitment, advising, and retention initiatives.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations within the university and with external arts organizations.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies, accreditation standards, and relevant regulations.
  • Represent the school at university events, professional conferences, and community engagements.
  • Foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for all students, faculty, and staff.

Required Skills

  • Doctorate in Music, Music Education, Ethnomusicology, Musicology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in higher education, including a significant record of teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic administration or significant leadership roles within a university or similar institution.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, personnel, and departmental operations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Record of successful grant writing or fundraising is highly desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a Department Chair, Associate Chair, or Program Director.
  • National or international reputation as a scholar, artist, or educator.
  • Experience with curriculum development and program assessment.
  • Familiarity with current trends and technologies in music and dance education and performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to build community partnerships and external relationships.
