Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Operating Room / Theatre Nurse to join our dedicated surgical team in St Austell, Cornwall. As an integral part of our theatre team, you will be responsible for providing expert nursing care to patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures, ensuring the highest standards of safety and clinical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in the operating room, ensuring adherence to best practices and hospital policies.
- Prepare the operating theatre for surgical procedures, including setting up sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Assist surgeons and anaesthetists during operations, performing duties such as scrubbing, circulating, and recovery care.
- Monitor patients' vital signs and condition throughout surgical procedures and intervene as necessary.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records, ensuring all documentation is up-to-date and compliant.
- Ensure the theatre environment is safe, clean, and well-maintained, adhering to infection control guidelines.
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative care and education to patients, ensuring their comfort and understanding.
- Participate in continuing professional development and contribute to the training and mentoring of junior staff.
Required Skills
- Registered Nurse (RN) qualification with active NMC registration (or eligible for NMC registration if international)
- Minimum of 3 years of post-registration experience in an operating theatre setting
- Proven experience in scrubbing, circulating, and anaesthetic/recovery nursing
- Up-to-date knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and equipment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a fast-paced environment
- Strong commitment to patient safety and quality care
Preferred Qualifications
- ENB 176/183 or equivalent specialist theatre qualification
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification
- Experience with various surgical specialties (e.g., orthopaedics, general surgery, ophthalmology)
- Previous experience mentoring or supervising junior staff
