Job Description

Join Schnitzer Steel Industries as a Part-time Scrap Sorter for weekend shifts in our heavy industrial facility in Scottsdale. This vital role involves physically sorting and segregating various types of scrap metal and materials, ensuring proper classification and processing. You will work in a fast-paced environment, contributing to our recycling efforts and supporting sustainable operations. This is a hands-on position requiring physical stamina, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sort and segregate various types of scrap metal and other materials (e.g., steel, aluminum, copper, mixed waste) according to company guidelines.
  • Operate basic material handling equipment safely and efficiently, as needed.
  • Inspect incoming materials for contaminants and ensure proper material categorization.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to ensure a safe and productive environment.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Collaborate with team members to optimize sorting processes and meet production goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform heavy lifting and physical labor regularly.
  • Strong attention to detail for accurate material sorting.
  • Basic understanding of different material types (metals, plastics, etc.).
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to all safety protocols.
  • Ability to work effectively in a heavy industrial, outdoor environment in various weather conditions.
  • Reliability and punctuality for weekend shifts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a heavy industrial, manufacturing, or recycling environment.
  • Experience operating forklifts or other material handling equipment (certification a plus).
  • Familiarity with scrap metal types and grading standards.
