Job Description

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Patient Trolley Porters to join our fast-paced team. This role is essential to the smooth running of our hospital, ensuring patients, equipment, and vital supplies are moved safely and efficiently across various departments. It’s a high-activity position, perfect for someone who enjoys being on the go and wants a role that offers a great workout while contributing to life-saving services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transport patients safely and comfortably between wards, departments, and treatment areas using trolleys, wheelchairs, and beds.
  • Move clinical and non-clinical equipment, medical records, specimens, and linen around the hospital.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of ambulances, ensuring patient safety and dignity.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and staff, providing reassurance and directions as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and good working order of trolleys and other transport equipment.
  • Respond promptly to requests for portering services via a centralised system.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations, infection control policies, and patient confidentiality guidelines.
  • Provide basic assistance to patients, such as helping them into and out of transport, where appropriate.

Required Skills

  • Excellent physical fitness and stamina for prolonged periods of walking, pushing, and lifting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and patient-focused approach.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential.
  • A positive attitude and a proactive approach to work.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for understanding instructions and record-keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a similar patient-facing or physically demanding role.
  • Experience working within a hospital or healthcare environment.
  • Current Manual Handling training certificate.
