Job Description

Durham Public Schools is seeking a compassionate and enthusiastic Special Education Music Aide to join our team. This meaningful role involves supporting students with diverse learning abilities through music-based activities, fostering their engagement, communication, and development. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist special education students during music activities and lessons, providing individual and small group support.
  • Help adapt music materials and activities to meet the specific needs and goals of students with varying abilities.
  • Encourage student participation, engagement, and self-expression through music.
  • Support students with communication, social interaction, and motor skills development within a musical context.
  • Collaborate with special education teachers, music therapists, and other school staff to implement individualized education programs (IEPs).
  • Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Monitor and document student progress and behavior as directed by supervising staff.

Required Skills

  • A genuine passion for working with children, particularly those with special needs.
  • Basic understanding of musical concepts and ability to engage with music (e.g., sing, clap rhythmically).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with students, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some experience working with children or individuals with disabilities (volunteer or paid).
  • Knowledge of various musical instruments or vocal techniques.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., education, music, psychology).
