Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Specialty Pharmacy Technician with a specific focus on Oncology and Biotech medications to join our team in Chula Vista, California. In this vital role, you will support our pharmacists in providing specialized pharmaceutical care to patients undergoing complex treatments, particularly in oncology. You will be instrumental in managing medication inventories, processing prescriptions, assisting with patient outreach, and ensuring the accurate and timely dispensing of high-cost, high-touch specialty medications. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a compassionate approach to patient care, all while adhering to strict regulatory guidelines and Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to quality and patient safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist pharmacists in preparing and dispensing specialty medications for oncology and biotech patients.
- Manage inventory for specialty medications, including ordering, receiving, stocking, and rotating stock, ensuring compliance with storage requirements.
- Process prescription orders accurately and efficiently, including data entry, insurance verification, and prior authorization support.
- Communicate with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies regarding medication orders, refills, and payment assistance programs.
- Maintain accurate patient profiles and medication records, ensuring all documentation is complete and up-to-date.
- Adhere to all state and federal regulations, as well as Kaiser Permanente policies and procedures related to pharmacy operations and patient privacy (HIPAA).
- Provide exceptional customer service and support to patients and healthcare professionals.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing training related to specialty pharmacy and oncology/biotech therapies.
Required Skills
- Current California Pharmacy Technician license
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician, with at least 1 year in a specialty pharmacy or hospital setting
- Demonstrated knowledge of oncology and biotech medications, handling procedures, and storage requirements
- Proficiency in pharmacy management software and electronic health records systems
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification by the PTCB or NHA
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Experience with Kaiser Permanente's pharmacy systems
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish/English)
