Job Description
Are you passionate about youth leadership and making a difference in your community? The YMCA of the Suncoast is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join our team as a Weekend Camp Counselor with a focus on Youth Leadership. In this part-time role, you will be instrumental in guiding young campers through engaging activities, fostering their personal growth, and instilling values of teamwork, respect, and responsibility. This position is perfect for someone looking to contribute positively to youth development during weekend hours, providing memorable experiences and helping shape future leaders. You will work directly with youth, facilitating program activities, ensuring safety, and serving as a positive role model.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise groups of campers during weekend camp activities, ensuring their safety and engagement.
- Implement age-appropriate youth leadership development programs and initiatives.
- Facilitate positive group dynamics and encourage teamwork and sportsmanship.
- Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Plan and execute creative and educational activities, including games, crafts, and outdoor adventures.
- Communicate effectively with campers, parents, and fellow staff members.
- Respond to and resolve minor camper conflicts or issues with guidance from supervisors.
- Ensure compliance with all YMCA policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
Required Skills
- Proven ability to work effectively with children and young adults.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated leadership potential or experience.
- Ability to plan and organize engaging activities.
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
- Enthusiasm for outdoor activities and youth development.
- Reliability and punctuality for weekend shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a camp counselor, youth leader, or in a similar role.
- Pursuing or completed a degree in Education, Recreation, Social Work, or a related field.
- Experience with conflict resolution and group management techniques.
- Specialized skills such as lifeguarding, arts & crafts, or sports coaching.
