Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Reptile / Exotic Pet Breeder Assistant to join our specialized animal care team. This role is crucial for supporting our breeding programs and ensuring the highest standards of welfare for our diverse collection of reptiles and exotic pets. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in herpetology and exotic animal husbandry, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail and a strong commitment to animal welfare. You will assist senior breeders and keepers in all aspects of daily care, habitat maintenance, and breeding activities, contributing directly to our conservation goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily feeding, cleaning, and general husbandry tasks for a variety of reptiles and exotic pets.
- Assist in monitoring animal health, behavior, and reproductive cycles, reporting any anomalies promptly.
- Maintain immaculate and species-appropriate habitats, including temperature, humidity, and substrate management.
- Support breeding initiatives, including egg incubation, hatchling care, and juvenile rearing.
- Accurately record and manage data related to animal health, breeding, diet, and environmental conditions.
- Prepare and administer specialized diets and enrichment items according to established protocols.
- Assist with veterinary examinations, treatments, and restraint procedures when necessary.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and animal care guidelines.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to ongoing improvements in animal care practices.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (volunteer or professional) with the care and husbandry of reptiles or other exotic pets.
- Demonstrated ability to follow strict protocols and maintain detailed records.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail regarding animal health and behavior.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
- Physical stamina to perform demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Basic understanding of animal welfare principles and ethical breeding practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, or a related field.
- Prior experience in a zoo, aquarium, wildlife sanctuary, or specialized breeding facility.
- Knowledge of reptile specific diseases, nutrition, and environmental enrichment techniques.
- Certification in animal first aid or veterinary assisting.
- Familiarity with ZIMS (Zoological Information Management System) or similar record-keeping software.
