Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and physically capable individual to join our Canal & Waterway Maintenance Crew. This is an essential outdoor government role focused on the upkeep and preservation of Scotland’s magnificent canal network. Working as part of a dedicated team, you will be involved in a variety of hands-on tasks to ensure our waterways remain safe, functional, and beautiful for all users.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on canal banks, towpaths, locks, bridges, and other canal infrastructure.
- Undertake vegetation management, including cutting grass, clearing weeds, and managing trees and shrubs.
- Assist with lock operations and support safe passage for boats and other waterway users.
- Participate in water management tasks, including monitoring water levels and clearing blockages.
- Operate and maintain various hand tools and light machinery safely and effectively.
- Respond to incidents and emergencies on the canal network as required.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and promote a safe working environment.
- Engage with the public, providing assistance and information as needed, representing Scottish Canals professionally.

- Ability to work effectively outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong physical fitness and manual dexterity for demanding tasks.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and task completion.
- Basic understanding of health and safety procedures.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks and techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in outdoor maintenance, groundskeeping, or construction.
- Full UK driving license.
- Experience operating small plant machinery (e.g., strimmers, mowers).
- Knowledge of waterway operations or canal heritage.
