Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Metallurgical Chemist with a strong focus on the mining and metal industry to join our advanced materials research and development team in Rutland, VT. This role is crucial for developing and optimizing processes related to metal extraction, refining, and alloy development, as well as ensuring the quality and performance of metallic products. The successful candidate will be instrumental in laboratory analysis, material characterization, and problem-solving to support both current operations and future innovations, contributing directly to our mission of delivering superior material solutions. A significant sign-on bonus will be offered to the successful candidate.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct chemical analysis of ore, metal samples, slags, and process solutions using techniques such as ICP-OES, XRF, AAS, and wet chemistry methods.
- Develop and validate analytical methodologies for various metallurgical applications.
- Perform material characterization studies using techniques like SEM, XRD, and optical microscopy to understand microstructure and phase composition.
- Collaborate with metallurgists and process engineers to optimize extraction, refining, and alloying processes.
- Interpret analytical data, prepare comprehensive reports, and present findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and quality control standards in the laboratory.
- Troubleshoot analytical instrumentation and develop preventative maintenance schedules.
- Contribute to research and development projects aimed at improving product performance and sustainability in the mining and metal sectors.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in analytical chemistry techniques (e.g., ICP-OES, XRF, AAS, wet chemistry).
- Strong understanding of metallurgical principles, including extraction, refining, and material science.
- Experience with material characterization methods (e.g., SEM, XRD).
- Excellent data analysis and interpretation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Experience in a mining, metals processing, or advanced materials manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, or electrometallurgy.
- Familiarity with ISO 17025 laboratory accreditation standards.
- Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and quality assurance.
