Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Trainee Tariff & Trade Classifier to join our dynamic team supporting government commerce initiatives. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals eager to build a career in international trade, customs compliance, and tariff classification. You will learn the intricacies of trade regulations, assist in classifying goods, and contribute to projects that facilitate seamless cross-border commerce for public sector clients. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop expertise in a critical area of government operations and trade policy. You will work closely with experienced consultants and play a vital role in ensuring compliance and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply Canadian and international tariff classification systems (e.g., Harmonized System – HS code) under guidance.
  • Assist in researching trade regulations, customs duties, and import/export requirements.
  • Support the classification of a wide range of goods and commodities for government procurement and trade activities.
  • Prepare and organize documentation required for trade compliance and audit purposes.
  • Collaborate with senior classifiers and consultants to understand client needs and project scopes.
  • Contribute to the development of internal training materials and best practices.
  • Maintain accurate records and databases related to trade classifications and rulings.
  • Participate in client meetings and workshops to gather information and present findings.
  • Stay informed of changes in trade legislation and tariff policies.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to conduct thorough research and synthesize information.

  • Basic understanding of economic principles or international trade (can be from coursework).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree or diploma in International Business, Commerce, Economics, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with data entry or database management systems.
  • Previous coursework or projects related to international trade or customs.
  • Proficiency in French is an asset.
