Job Description
Are you a passionate and aspiring data scientist with a keen interest in the energy sector? Duke Energy is seeking a motivated Data Science Intern to join our innovative team. This is a unique opportunity to apply your analytical skills to real-world energy challenges, contributing to projects that enhance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. As a 100% remote intern, you will collaborate with experienced data scientists and engineers, gaining hands-on experience with large datasets and advanced analytical techniques within the dynamic energy industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in collecting, cleaning, and preprocessing large datasets related to energy consumption, grid operations, and renewable energy generation.
- Develop and implement statistical models and machine learning algorithms to identify trends, predict outcomes, and generate insights.
- Support the design and execution of A/B tests and other experimental designs to evaluate the impact of new initiatives.
- Create compelling visualizations and reports to communicate findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate with senior data scientists to refine methodologies and explore new analytical approaches.
- Research and evaluate new data sources and technologies relevant to the energy sector.
- Document processes, methodologies, and findings clearly and concisely.
Required Skills
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python or R) with relevant libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn).
- Solid understanding of statistical concepts and machine learning fundamentals.
- Experience with SQL for data manipulation and querying.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and analytical thinking.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated interest in the energy industry and sustainability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous internship or project experience in data analysis or data science.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and data warehousing solutions.
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
- Knowledge of time-series analysis or geospatial data analysis.
- Academic projects or coursework specifically focused on energy systems or utilities.
