Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and self-reliant Traffic Warden / Control Officer to join our Public Safety team. In this critical role, you will play a vital part in maintaining the smooth flow of traffic, ensuring pedestrian safety, and enforcing traffic regulations across the city. This position emphasizes independent work, requiring individuals who can take initiative, make sound decisions, and effectively manage their assigned duties without constant direct supervision. Key Responsibilities
- Directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic at designated intersections, special events, and accident scenes to ensure safety and prevent congestion.
- Issuing warnings and citations for parking and minor traffic infractions in accordance with municipal bylaws and provincial statutes.
- Responding to citizen inquiries and providing information on traffic flow, road closures, and public safety matters.
- Assisting emergency services personnel at incident scenes by managing traffic and ensuring safe access.
- Conducting regular patrols of assigned areas to identify and address traffic-related issues proactively.
- Maintaining accurate records of activities, incidents, and enforcement actions.
- Educating the public on traffic safety regulations and promoting safe driving and pedestrian habits.
Required Skills
- Proven ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in dynamic situations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with the public and colleagues.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail for identifying traffic issues and enforcing regulations.
- Ability to remain calm and authoritative in stressful or confrontational situations.
- Physical stamina and ability to stand, walk, and direct traffic outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods.
- Basic knowledge of traffic laws, bylaws, and safety procedures.
- A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in law enforcement, security, or a similar public safety role.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience in customer service or public interaction.
- A post-secondary certificate or diploma in a related field.
