Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Google Network Support Engineer to join our team in Derby, providing essential field and remote support for our critical network infrastructure. In this hybrid role, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of Google’s network across various sites, as well as providing remote assistance to internal teams and external partners. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, strong technical expertise in networking, and the ability to travel to various locations within the region as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced technical support and troubleshooting for Google's network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other network devices.
  • Conduct on-site diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of network equipment, requiring occasional travel to different data centers or field locations.
  • Offer remote support to resolve complex network issues, collaborating with global engineering teams.
  • Monitor network performance and identify potential issues, implementing preventative measures to minimize downtime.
  • Participate in the deployment, configuration, and upgrade of network hardware and software.
  • Document network configurations, changes, and troubleshooting procedures thoroughly.
  • Respond to incidents and alerts, ensuring rapid resolution and minimal impact on services.
  • Educate and assist junior engineers and other staff members on network best practices and problem resolution.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, and other routing protocols.
  • Experience with Cisco, Juniper, or similar enterprise-grade networking equipment.
  • Strong understanding of network security principles and firewalls.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex network problems efficiently.
  • Experience with network monitoring tools and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and command-line interfaces.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for both field and remote interactions.
  • Valid UK driving license and willingness to travel for field support.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, JNCIS).
  • Experience with cloud networking platforms (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure).
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for network automation.
  • Previous experience in a large-scale, high-availability network environment.
