Job Description

Join the esteemed Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County as an Educational Paleontology Outreach Specialist, focusing on school programs in the Victorville area. This pivotal role involves designing, developing, and delivering engaging paleontology-focused educational experiences to K-12 students and educators within schools and community settings. You will be responsible for bringing the exciting world of dinosaurs, fossils, and ancient life directly to classrooms, inspiring the next generation of scientists and curious minds. This is a hybrid role, balancing time in our Victorville-area satellite office, preparing materials, with extensive travel to local schools for program delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement hands-on paleontology education programs tailored for various K-12 grade levels, aligning with state science standards.
  • Deliver engaging in-school workshops, presentations, and interactive activities on topics such as fossil formation, dinosaur discovery, and prehistoric ecosystems.
  • Manage program logistics, including scheduling with schools, preparing educational materials, and transporting necessary specimens or replicas.
  • Collaborate with museum educators and paleontologists to ensure scientific accuracy and pedagogical effectiveness of all outreach content.
  • Train and supervise volunteers or interns assisting with outreach programs.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness through feedback collection and data analysis, making recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Represent NHM at community events, science fairs, and educational conferences to promote paleontology programs.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Education, or a related scientific field.
  • 2+ years of experience in formal or informal science education, with a focus on K-12 audiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of paleontology and earth sciences.
  • Excellent public speaking, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to develop and deliver engaging educational content for diverse age groups.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Valid California Driver's License and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience working in a museum, science center, or similar educational institution.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or other languages common in the Victorville community.
  • Experience with curriculum development and alignment to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
  • Familiarity with digital educational tools and virtual program delivery.
