Job Description

We are seeking a highly enthusiastic and skilled High School Jazz Band Instructor to lead our evening rehearsals. This part-time position is ideal for a dedicated musician and educator passionate about jazz music and committed to nurturing young talent. The instructor will be responsible for developing and implementing engaging rehearsal plans, teaching fundamental jazz concepts, improving ensemble performance, and preparing students for various performances and competitions. This role offers the opportunity to work with motivated high school students in a supportive and well-resourced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead evening jazz band rehearsals, typically 2-3 times per week, during the school year.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive curriculum and rehearsal plans tailored to high school jazz musicians.
  • Teach foundational jazz theory, improvisation techniques, ensemble dynamics, and advanced musical concepts.
  • Select appropriate repertoire that challenges and inspires students, covering various jazz styles.
  • Conduct auditions, place students in appropriate sections, and manage sectionals effectively.
  • Provide individualized feedback and support to students to enhance their musical skills and performance.
  • Prepare the jazz band for school concerts, community events, festivals, and competitions.
  • Collaborate with other music faculty to align curriculum and support overall music program goals.
  • Maintain a positive, encouraging, and disciplined rehearsal environment.
  • Manage and care for musical instruments and equipment in coordination with school staff.
  • Attend occasional faculty meetings and professional development sessions as required.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in jazz performance and pedagogy, with a strong understanding of various jazz styles.
  • Proficiency on a primary jazz instrument (e.g., saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums, guitar).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and conduct high school-level instrumental ensembles.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire young musicians of diverse skill levels.
  • Strong knowledge of music theory, harmony, and improvisation techniques in a jazz context.
  • Prior experience working with high school students in an educational or performance setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Education, Jazz Studies, or a related field.
  • California Teaching Credential with a music authorization.
  • Experience with music technology and digital audio workstations.
  • A strong network within the local jazz community.
