Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Midwest Paleontology Lab Assistant to support our research initiatives in New Port Richey, FL. This role is crucial for the efficient operation of our laboratory, assisting paleontologists and researchers in processing, cataloging, and preserving fossil specimens. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in paleontology, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to scientific accuracy. This is a stable industry role within a respected academic institution.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and clean fossil specimens using various tools and techniques.
- Catalog and inventory specimens accurately, maintaining detailed records in databases.
- Assist with the organization and maintenance of the fossil collection.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functionality and cleanliness.
- Support researchers with data collection and preliminary analysis.
- Adhere to strict laboratory safety protocols and ethical guidelines.
- Assist in preparing specimens for display or transport.
- Perform general lab upkeep and supply management.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of laboratory procedures and safety.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to meticulously handle delicate specimens.
- Proficiency in data entry and basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs and perform tasks requiring fine motor skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Geology, Anthropology, or a related scientific field.
- Previous experience in a laboratory or museum setting.
