Job Description
We are actively seeking a highly motivated and experienced Oversize Load Pilot Driver to join our team as an independent contractor in a remote capacity. This critical role involves safely escorting oversize and overweight loads across diverse routes, primarily within the Western United States. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional situational awareness, strict adherence to all traffic laws and state regulations, and a proactive approach to mitigating potential hazards. As a remote pilot driver, you will operate your own certified escort vehicle and manage a flexible schedule, playing an indispensable role in the secure and timely transportation of specialized cargo.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a properly equipped and maintained escort vehicle in full compliance with all state and federal regulations for oversize load movements.
- Provide safe and efficient escort services for oversize/overweight loads, including performing front and rear escort duties as assigned.
- Communicate effectively and continuously with truck drivers, dispatch personnel, and other relevant parties to ensure seamless transit operations.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the escort vehicle and all associated equipment.
- Identify potential hazards, obstacles, and route challenges in advance and communicate them promptly to the heavy haul driver and dispatch.
- Effectively manage traffic control and ensure the safety of the public and the integrity of the load during all phases of transit.
- Maintain accurate logs, necessary permits, and all required documentation meticulously.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, company policies, and industry best practices.
- Stay current on all state-specific pilot car regulations, requirements, and any changes thereto.
Required Skills
- Valid Driver's License with an impeccable driving record.
- Minimum of 3 years (36 months) of proven experience as an oversize load pilot driver or commercial driver.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and state-specific oversize/overweight load escort requirements.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, capable of clear and concise interaction.
- Strong observational skills and superior decision-making abilities under pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to operate an escort vehicle safely and professionally for extended periods.
- Must own or have consistent access to a properly equipped, permitted, and insured pilot/escort vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification from recognized pilot car training programs (e.g., NCPC, specific state certifications).
- Prior experience with a diverse range of oversize cargo types (e.g., wind turbine components, industrial machinery, modular buildings).
- Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and advanced route planning software.
- Extensive geographic familiarity with major transportation routes in the Western United States.
