Job Description
Are you passionate about making a positive impact in your community? The Austin Police Department is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Police Community Support Trainees. This entry-level position is perfect for those looking to start a career in public service without prior law enforcement experience. You will play a vital role in building bridges between the police force and the community, providing support to frontline officers, and assisting with non-emergency tasks. This role focuses on community engagement, problem-solving, and providing a visible, reassuring presence in local neighborhoods.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage positively with community members, offering assistance and information.
- Provide a visible and reassuring presence in designated patrol areas, fostering trust and rapport.
- Assist police officers with non-enforcement duties, such as administrative tasks, scene management, and public inquiries.
- Respond to and resolve minor public inquiries and issues, escalating complex situations to appropriate personnel.
- Support crime prevention initiatives through community outreach and educational activities.
- Attend and represent the department at community events, meetings, and forums.
- Document and report incidents, observations, and community feedback accurately and promptly.
- Undergo comprehensive training to develop skills in community policing, conflict resolution, and public safety procedures.
Required Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to build rapport with diverse groups.
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and a calm demeanor under pressure.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer literacy for report writing and administrative tasks.
- A valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
- Must be 18 years of age or older and eligible to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in customer service, community outreach, or a volunteer role.
- Knowledge of the Austin metropolitan area and its diverse communities.
- Fluency in a second language (e.g., Spanish).
