Job Description
Are you fascinated by ancient life, fossils, and the history of our planet? The San Diego Natural History Museum invites enthusiastic individuals to join our team as a Paleontology Career Starter. This unique full-time opportunity offers comprehensive mentorship and hands-on training to kickstart your career in paleontology. You will work alongside experienced paleontologists, contributing to ongoing research, field expeditions, and the preservation of our invaluable fossil collections. No prior experience is required; we are looking for curious minds eager to learn and dedicate themselves to scientific discovery. This is an on-site position based in Chula Vista, offering a deep dive into the world of paleontology.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist paleontologists with fossil preparation and conservation in the lab.
- Support fieldwork activities, including site excavation, documentation, and specimen collection.
- Perform data entry and manage digital records of fossil specimens and locality information.
- Clean, sort, and organize fossil collections under supervision.
- Contribute to basic literature reviews and research support tasks.
- Learn and adhere to best practices in fossil preservation and ethical scientific conduct.
- Participate in team meetings and educational outreach programs as opportunities arise.
Required Skills
- A strong passion for paleontology, geology, and natural history.
- Excellent attention to detail and patience for meticulous tasks.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively in a team environment.
- Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting up to 25 lbs, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods, both in a lab setting and potentially outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- A commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some coursework in biology, geology, environmental science, or related fields.
- Previous experience in a lab setting, even if not directly paleontology-related.
- Familiarity with GIS software or databases is a plus.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to field sites as needed.
