Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Geological Field Aide with a strong interest in fossil discovery to join our dynamic team. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals eager to gain hands-on experience in geological fieldwork and paleontology across various states. You will assist lead geologists and paleontologists in identifying, excavating, documenting, and preserving significant fossil finds. This role requires extensive travel, a robust work ethic, and the ability to thrive in challenging outdoor environments. Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior geologists and paleontologists with site reconnaissance and survey for potential fossil-bearing strata.
- Participate in meticulous excavation, collection, and documentation of fossil specimens following established protocols.
- Operate and maintain field equipment, including GPS devices, cameras, and basic hand tools.
- Record detailed field notes, photographs, and geological context for all discoveries.
- Prepare, label, and package specimens for safe transport to laboratories.
- Conduct preliminary geological mapping and stratigraphy under supervision.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and environmental regulations in the field.
- Contribute to data entry and preliminary analysis of field findings.
- Collaborate effectively with team members in often remote and rugged conditions.
Required Skills
- Basic knowledge of geological principles or earth science.
- Strong physical stamina and ability to work in various outdoor conditions (e.g., heat, cold, uneven terrain).
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow precise instructions and protocols.
- Proficiency with basic hand tools and field equipment.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or coursework in Geology, Paleontology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- Prior experience with fieldwork, camping, or outdoor activities.
- Familiarity with GPS systems and data collection software.
- Experience with photography for scientific documentation.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
