Job Description

Are you fascinated by ancient life and eager to learn a unique, hands-on skill? The Houston Museum of Natural Science is offering an incredible opportunity for an entry-level Fossil Preparator. No prior experience is required – we provide comprehensive, on-site training to transform your passion into a professional skill. As a Fossil Preparator, you will play a crucial role in the scientific process, carefully extracting, cleaning, conserving, and restoring fossil specimens from various geological periods. This is a chance to work directly with priceless artifacts, contribute to scientific discovery, and help bring the stories of prehistoric life to our visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured training program to learn all aspects of fossil preparation techniques.
  • Carefully remove matrix (rock) from fossil specimens using a variety of tools, including air scribes, hand tools, and micro-blasters, under supervision.
  • Apply consolidants and adhesives to stabilize and repair fragile fossils.
  • Assist with the documentation and cataloging of fossil specimens, maintaining accurate records.
  • Prepare fossils for research, exhibition, and long-term curation.
  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace.
  • Follow strict safety protocols and conservation best practices.
  • Collaborate with senior preparators, paleontologists, and other museum staff.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Exceptional patience and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong interest in paleontology, geology, or natural history.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and tools.
  • Ability to follow precise instructions and maintain focus for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college coursework in a science-related field (e.g., biology, geology, anthropology) is a plus.
  • Previous experience with intricate hobbies or crafts (e.g., model building, jewelry making, detailed artwork).
  • Experience working in a museum, laboratory, or research environment (volunteer experience welcome).
  • Basic computer proficiency for data entry and record-keeping.
