Job Description
Saint Leo University invites applications for a tenure-track University Music Professor with a strong commitment to both teaching excellence and impactful research. This position is ideal for an accomplished scholar-practitioner who is passionate about contributing to a robust music program and advancing knowledge in their field. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in music, maintain an active research agenda culminating in peer-reviewed publications or significant creative works, and contribute to the university’s service initiatives. We seek candidates who can enhance our department’s strengths and bring innovative perspectives to our curriculum.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach a range of undergraduate and/or graduate courses in music theory, history, performance, composition, or music education, as per departmental needs.
- Develop and maintain an active and sustained research program, leading to peer-reviewed publications, successful grant applications, or significant creative contributions.
- Advise and mentor students, including supervision of theses, dissertations, or capstone projects.
- Participate in departmental, college, and university service, including committee work and program development.
- Engage in professional development activities to stay current in the field of music scholarship and pedagogy.
- Contribute to the cultural life of the university and the wider community through performances, presentations, or outreach initiatives.
- Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects and curriculum enhancements.
Required Skills
- Doctorate (Ph.D. or D.M.A.) in Music or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated potential for or established record of excellence in teaching at the university level.
- Evidence of an active research agenda with peer-reviewed publications, presentations, or significant creative works.
- Expertise in one or more specialized areas of music, such as musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, composition, performance (instrumental/vocal), or music education.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with grant writing and securing external funding for research or creative projects.
- Experience in curriculum development and assessment.
- Proficiency in music technology and its application in teaching and research.
- Experience mentoring graduate students.
- Demonstrated leadership potential within an academic setting.
