Job Description

Are you a 14-year-old ready to take your first step into a leadership role? The YMCA of the Suncoast is seeking enthusiastic and responsible young individuals for our 14 Year Old Teens Camp Counselor Trainee program with a strong leadership focus. As a Trainee, you will work alongside experienced camp counselors and directors, learning the ropes of camp leadership, program facilitation, and child supervision. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior camp counselors with daily camp activities and programs.
  • Engage with campers (ages 5-12) under supervision, fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
  • Participate in training sessions focused on leadership, child safety, and program planning.
  • Help organize and lead age-appropriate games, crafts, and outdoor activities.
  • Support campers in adhering to camp rules and promoting good sportsmanship.
  • Learn and practice effective communication techniques with campers, parents, and staff.
  • Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and organized camp environment.
  • Shadow experienced counselors to understand group management and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrate positive role modeling and enthusiasm throughout the camp day.
  • Attend and actively participate in all staff meetings and debriefs.

Required Skills

  • Must be 14 years old by the start of the camp season.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
  • Strong desire to work with children and be a positive role model.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • Reliable, punctual, and responsible.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a camper at a YMCA or similar program.
  • Participation in school leadership programs or community service.
  • Familiarity with various recreational activities, games, or arts and crafts.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid (certification not required, training will be provided).
