Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Think Tank Archivist with a strong focus on historical records to join our Special Collections and University Archives team. This critical role involves the acquisition, processing, preservation, and provision of access to a wide range of historical materials, including manuscripts, photographs, digital records, and institutional documents. The Archivist will play a key role in developing and implementing archival best practices, supporting scholarly research, and ensuring the long-term integrity of our historical collections. Key Responsibilities
- Appraise, acquire, arrange, and describe historical records and collections, ensuring adherence to professional archival standards (e.g., DACS, EAD).
- Develop and implement strategies for the long-term preservation of physical and digital historical materials.
- Manage the accessioning and deaccessioning processes for archival collections.
- Provide expert reference and research assistance to faculty, students, and the public utilizing historical records.
- Create and maintain finding aids, catalog records, and other access tools for historical collections.
- Collaborate with other library departments and university units on projects related to digital initiatives, outreach, and exhibition development.
- Participate in collection development activities, identifying potential acquisitions that align with the university's research and historical mission.
- Monitor environmental conditions in storage areas and recommend conservation measures as needed.
- Train and supervise student assistants and interns working with historical records.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) or Archival Studies from an ALA-accredited program, with a concentration in archives.
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) working with historical archival collections in an institutional setting.
- In-depth knowledge of archival theory, best practices, and standards (e.g., DACS, PREMIS, METS).
- Proficiency in archival content management systems and descriptive tools (e.g., ArchivesSpace, Omeka).
- Experience with digital preservation methodologies and tools for historical records.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with grant writing and management for archival projects.
- Familiarity with historical research methodologies and trends.
- Proficiency in a second language relevant to historical collections.
- Experience in outreach and public engagement activities related to archives.
