Job Description
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced High School Jazz Band Instructor to lead our evening rehearsals. This part-time position is perfect for a passionate musician and educator dedicated to cultivating a love for jazz among high school students. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing the jazz band, selecting repertoire, preparing students for performances, and fostering a collaborative and inspiring learning environment. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct engaging and productive evening rehearsals for the high school jazz band.
- Select appropriate and challenging jazz repertoire that aligns with student skill levels and educational objectives.
- Prepare students for various performances, including school concerts, community events, and competitions.
- Provide individual and group instruction on jazz techniques, improvisation, and music theory.
- Mentor students in developing their musical talents, stage presence, and teamwork skills.
- Maintain a positive and inclusive rehearsal environment that encourages student growth and participation.
- Collaborate with other music faculty to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive music program.
- Manage band equipment and resources effectively.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in jazz performance and improvisation.
- Strong conducting and rehearsal techniques.
- Comprehensive knowledge of jazz theory, history, and various jazz styles.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with high school students.
- Ability to motivate and inspire young musicians.
- Proficiency in at least one jazz instrument (e.g., saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums, guitar).
- Experience in repertoire selection and arrangement for high school level jazz ensembles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Education, Jazz Studies, or a related field.
- Previous experience teaching or directing high school jazz bands.
- Familiarity with the Texas state music curriculum standards.
- Experience with music software and technology for notation and practice aids.
