Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Lead Excavation Technician with a strong focus on geological survey methodologies to join our dynamic team in Charlotte, NC. This critical role involves leading and executing excavation activities for various geological and environmental projects, ensuring data integrity, site safety, and project efficiency. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in subsurface investigations, working closely with geologists and engineers to provide crucial insights for infrastructure development, environmental remediation, and resource exploration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise excavation crews and equipment operators on project sites, ensuring adherence to project plans and safety protocols.
  • Operate various excavation equipment, including backhoes, excavators, and trenchers, for soil sampling, test pit excavation, and trenching for geological investigations.
  • Implement and enforce site-specific health and safety plans (HASPs) and AECOM's safety standards.
  • Collect and document soil, rock, and groundwater samples according to specified geological and environmental protocols.
  • Maintain detailed field logs, including excavation depths, geological observations, sample locations, and equipment calibration records.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on excavation equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Assist geologists and engineers with in-field testing, data collection, and the installation of monitoring wells or instrumentation.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, and team members regarding project status, challenges, and findings.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians on best practices for excavation techniques, safety, and data collection.
  • Ensure proper site restoration upon project completion.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in excavation, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role.
  • Proven experience with geological investigation techniques and environmental sampling protocols.
  • Proficiency in operating various heavy excavation equipment (e.g., excavators, backhoes, skid steers).
  • Strong understanding of site safety regulations, including OSHA 1926 construction standards and trenching/excavation safety.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, geological maps, and site specifications.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in various outdoor weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or vocational training in heavy equipment operation, construction management, or a related field.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.
  • HAZWOPER 40-Hour certification.
  • Experience with GPS and survey equipment for precise location marking and data collection.
  • Familiarity with environmental drilling techniques.
