Job Description
We are seeking a meticulous and linguistically astute Pronunciation Checker for Apps to join our Language Technology team. In this on-site role based in Geelong, you will play a critical part in ensuring the highest quality and accuracy of spoken language in our various applications, from language learning tools to AI-powered assistants. You will perform detailed phonetic analysis, identify pronunciation discrepancies, and provide expert feedback to enhance our speech synthesis and recognition systems. This position demands a keen ear, a deep understanding of phonetics and phonology, and a passion for linguistic precision in a technological context.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough phonetic and phonological analysis of spoken language data across multiple languages.
- Rigorously test and validate pronunciation accuracy within various Google language learning and AI applications.
- Identify, document, and categorize pronunciation errors, regional variations, and linguistic inconsistencies.
- Collaborate closely with linguists, software engineers, and product managers to debug and implement solutions for pronunciation issues.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of comprehensive pronunciation guidelines, phonetic dictionaries, and linguistic resources.
- Provide detailed and actionable linguistic feedback for the continuous improvement of speech synthesis (Text-to-Speech) and speech recognition (Automatic Speech Recognition) models.
- Stay informed about the latest advancements in phonetics, phonology, computational linguistics, and language technology trends.
Required Skills
- Strong academic background in Linguistics, Phonetics, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated expertise in phonetic transcription, particularly with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
- Proficiency in at least one foreign language, with an understanding of its unique phonetic challenges.
- Proven experience in linguistic data annotation, analysis, or quality assurance.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with app testing methodologies and bug reporting processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for conveying complex linguistic concepts to technical and non-technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, or a related discipline.
- Prior experience working with speech recognition or text-to-speech technologies.
- Experience in an agile software development environment.
- Basic programming skills (e.g., Python) for data manipulation or scripting.
- Understanding of machine learning concepts as applied to natural language processing.
