Job Description

The Public Transportation Planning Intern will gain valuable hands-on experience in the transit planning department, assisting with various projects related to service analysis, route optimization, schedule development, and long-range planning initiatives. This internship offers a unique opportunity to learn about the complexities of urban transit operations and contribute to impactful projects that serve the community. The intern will work closely with experienced planning professionals and utilize data-driven approaches to solve real-world transportation challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with data collection, analysis, and visualization related to ridership, on-time performance, and operational efficiency.
  • Support the development and evaluation of new transit routes, schedule adjustments, and service improvements.
  • Conduct research on best practices in public transportation planning and policy.
  • Prepare maps, reports, and presentations using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other planning tools.
  • Assist with public outreach materials and community engagement efforts.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to ongoing planning projects.

Required Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Genuine interest in public transportation, urban planning, or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Experience with data analysis tools or statistical software.
  • Knowledge of public transit operations and scheduling principles.
