Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Surface Chemist with a strong focus on nanotechnology to join our cutting-edge R&D team in Portland, Maine. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing and characterizing novel surface modifications and nanomaterials for a wide range of applications, contributing to the next generation of 3M’s innovative products. This role operates within a state-of-the-art laboratory environment, fostering collaboration and scientific discovery in a dynamic team setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct fundamental and applied research in surface chemistry, colloid science, and nanotechnology.
- Design and execute experiments for the synthesis, modification, and characterization of surfaces and nanomaterials.
- Utilize advanced analytical techniques such as XPS, SEM, AFM, TEM, and contact angle goniometry to characterize material properties.
- Develop and optimize new processes for surface functionalization, thin film deposition, and coating applications.
- Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including material scientists, engineers, and product development specialists.
- Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and troubleshoot technical challenges to drive project progress.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and contribute to intellectual property development, including patent applications.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure proper calibration, and adhere strictly to all safety protocols and quality standards.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Proven expertise and hands-on experience in surface chemistry, interface science, or thin film technology.
- Demonstrated proficiency with surface characterization techniques (e.g., XPS, SEM, AFM, contact angle measurements).
- Strong understanding of nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, and functionalization methods.
- Ability to design experiments (DoE), interpret complex data, and effectively troubleshoot technical issues.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and team collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-doctoral experience in an industrial or academic setting with a focus on applied nanotechnology.
- Experience with advanced spectroscopic or microscopic techniques beyond the basics (e.g., TOF-SIMS, cryo-TEM).
- Familiarity with polymer chemistry, materials processing, and scale-up challenges.
- A track record of scientific publications, presentations, or patent applications.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
