Job Description

Are you a budding artist, designer, or craftsperson with a passion for bringing imaginative concepts to life? Imagination is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Prop Making & Fabrication Intern to join our dynamic Studio Art team in York. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in a professional creative environment, contributing to the fabrication of diverse props and elements for a variety of projects, including brand experiences, exhibitions, and unique installations. You will work alongside experienced fabricators, designers, and artists, learning fundamental techniques and contributing to real-world projects from concept to completion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior fabricators and artists in the construction and finishing of props and scenic elements.
  • Learn and apply various fabrication techniques including woodworking, metalworking, sculpting, casting, and finishing.
  • Prepare materials and tools for projects, ensuring a well-organised and safe workshop environment.
  • Conduct research on materials, techniques, and historical styles as required by project briefs.
  • Maintain equipment and tools, reporting any issues or maintenance needs.
  • Assist with the installation and de-installation of props at various project sites when necessary.
  • Contribute to brainstorming sessions and offer creative input for design challenges.
  • Adhere to all health and safety guidelines and company policies.
  • Document work processes and maintain accurate records of materials used and time spent on tasks.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of workshop tools and safety procedures.
  • Demonstrable interest in prop making, model making, sculpture, or related crafts.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively in a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality craftsmanship.
  • Eagerness to learn new skills and adapt to various project demands.
  • Good communication skills and a proactive attitude.
  • Basic sketching or rendering abilities to communicate ideas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant program (e.g., Fine Art, Theatre Design, Product Design, Industrial Design).
  • Experience with power tools and hand tools.
  • Familiarity with various materials such as wood, foam, plastics, resins, and paints.
  • A portfolio demonstrating creative projects, models, or artistic endeavors (even personal projects).
  • Basic CAD or 3D modeling skills (e.g., SketchUp, Rhino, Fusion 360).
