Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and proactive General Hand to join our Estates team at the University of Birmingham. This role is crucial in ensuring the smooth daily operation and upkeep of our extensive campus facilities. You will undertake a wide variety of tasks, contributing to a safe, clean, and functional environment for our students, staff, and visitors. This is a full-time, on-site position offering a stable career path with an excellent pension scheme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance tasks, including minor repairs to fixtures, fittings, and basic plumbing.
  • Conduct routine checks and inspections of buildings and grounds, reporting any defects or issues promptly.
  • Assist with the setup and dismantling of equipment for events, lectures, and examinations.
  • Undertake basic cleaning duties, including litter picking, waste management, and ensuring communal areas are tidy.
  • Support the movement and delivery of materials, furniture, and equipment across campus.
  • Assist skilled tradespersons (e.g., electricians, plumbers) with their tasks as required.
  • Respond to urgent requests and emergencies to ensure campus safety and operational continuity.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and university policies.
  • Maintain grounds, including basic gardening tasks like weeding or watering, when necessary.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrable practical aptitude for general maintenance and handyman tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Reliability and a strong work ethic.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties including lifting, carrying, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a similar role within a school, university, or large commercial environment.
  • Full UK driving license.
  • Basic knowledge of DIY, plumbing, or electrical work.
  • First Aid certification.
